Children’s Medications

Why are children great candidates for compounded medications?
It is a well known fact that medication time can turn into a battle between many parents and children. Whether it is a resistance to the idea of taking a medicine, a dislike for the medication’s taste or texture, difficulties swallowing the dosage form, or the fear of injections; children can pose a great challenge to medication administration.
How can the Medicine Shoppe help?

Every person is unique in this world and sometimes the standard manufactured product does not work best for everyone. Children are an excellent example of this because children are not “just little adults”. A child’s body is structurally and chemically different than an adult’s and often times simply reducing the adult dose of a medication will not be safe or work the best for a child. Here at The Medicine Shoppe, we can work with you and your doctor to compound a medication for your child’s specific needs that may not be commercially available for the general public. We can also compound medications that combine multiple ingredients into one formulation, remove preservatives or dyes that your child may be allergic to, and compound medications that are no longer commercially available. Also, many pediatric disease states or disorders can benefit from a personalized compounded medication. Examples of these disease states or disorders that The Medicine Shoppe can help compound a medication specifically for your child include:

•Acne
•Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
•Autism
•Diaper Rash
•Fear of injections (when an injection is the only commercially available dosage form)
•Head Lice/Scabies
•Infections
•Nausea/Vomiting
•Phenylketonuria
•Pulmonary Artery Hypertension (PAH)
•Seizures
•Topical Anesthesia
•Warts

The majority of medications on the market are not approved for use in pediatric patients, and when a medication is not approved for use in infants or children, it is generally not available in a suitable pediatric dosage form (ex: liquid). Fortunately, we at The Medicine Shoppe are here to help! At the Medicine Shoppe, we can use our unique compounding abilities to compound many different drugs into various dosage forms and doses that are not available through the manufacturer, so that your child will find their medication more pleasing, easier to take, and just right for their needs. For example, many drugs can be compounded into a transdermal gel, that when applied to the correct area such as the child’s wrist, they can be absorbed through the skin and help treat a child’s nausea. Some of the various dosage forms that we can use to compound a medication that is more suitable for your child include:

•Capsules
•Suspensions
•Solutions
•Suppositories
•Creams
•Ointments
•Lotions
•Chapsticks
•Nasal Sprays
•Transdermal gels
•Lozenges
•“Gummy bears”
•Lollipops
•Pacifier dosages

*Please understand that not all drugs are safe to be used in children and cannot be compounded into every dosage form. The drug’s safety in children and the drug’s physical and chemical properties can limit the dosage forms that may be used. However, we will be more than willing to work with you and your doctor to find a solution that works best for you and your child.

If the right dosage form that suits your child’s needs happens to not suit your child’s taste buds quite as well, we can flavor any oral medication to try and help cover up that “yucky” medicine taste. Some of the flavors that we carry that might tickle your tike’s taste buds can include:

•Bubblegum
•Cherry
•Crème dementhe
•Grape
•Lemon
•Maple
•Marshmallow
•Peppermint
•Raspberry
•Root beer
•Strawberry
•Tangerine
•Vanilla

*Please note that not all flavors can be used for every drug and oral dosage form depending on the physical and chemical properties of the drugs and the flavors themselves. However, we will be happy to work with you and your child to find the right flavor for them that makes medicine time more enjoyable for all.

If you ever have questions about your compounded medications feel free to contact us and one of our trained staff will be happy to assist you. So come on into The Medicine Shoppe and let us help you and your little one make medicine time, fun time!
